Dear dad . .

As you reach the culmination of your remarkable career as a paramedic, I want to take this opportunity to express how immensely proud I am of you.

I want to acknowledge the countless sacrifices you made throughout your career. For every weekend, every Christmas, and every night shift you have worked, on a modest wage, you put the needs of others before your own. I remember when Mum had to find someone locally with a 3D printer to create masks because you and your colleagues didn’t have adequate protective gear during the height of the COVID-19 crisis. Despite the risks, you fearlessly ventured into the frontlines, saving lives, providing comfort, and holding the hands of those in need. You have always put the wellbeing of others above your own.

Tomorrow, as you reflect on your illustrious career, I want you to know how much your dedication has meant to me and everyone whose lives you’ve touched. Your own reflections on your journey paint a vivid picture of the challenges and triumphs you experienced. From your early days with nothing but a hat and a sense of determination, to your various courses and the multitude of harrowing situations you faced, your resilience has been an inspiration to me.

You’ve encountered unimaginable situations, witnessed the best and worst of humanity, and yet, you’ve never wavered in your commitment to helping others. You’ve faced murders, shootings, stabbings, suicides and unimaginable accidents, providing care and comfort in the face of tragedy. You’ve dealt with countless emergencies, administering life-saving measures, and bringing hope to those in despair.

Amidst all the challenges, you’ve maintained your sense of humour, even when dealing with less-than-pleasant situations. Your ability to find laughter in the midst of chaos is a testament to your strength of character and resilience. You’ve gone above and beyond your call of duty, providing not just medical care, but also emotional support, listening to patients’ families, and patiently persuading those in need of mental health assistance.

Your anecdotes of being “pooed on, wee’d on, vomited on” and the peculiar moments you’ve encountered along the way highlight the depth of your experiences. You’ve been there in the darkest hours, searching for missing individuals, waiting for someone on the verge of jumping off a church roof, and enduring the unpredictable challenges that come with the territory.

You’ve witnessed both the triumphs and the struggles of humanity, but through it all, your dedication and love for your work and your family has never wavered. To top it all off you have delivered three precious lives into this world, providing a beacon of hope and joy amidst the madness.

As you step into this new phase of your life, Dad, please know that your legacy as a paramedic will forever inspire me. You have been a brilliant father, a source of strength, and a true role model. I couldn’t be prouder of the person you are and the impact you’ve made in the lives of others.

You are more than just a paramedic; you are a true hero. The word “hero” may be used frequently, but you embody its true meaning. Your selflessness, bravery, and compassion have touched the lives of countless individuals. You have been there for people at their most vulnerable moments, offering hope and reassurance when it mattered the most.

Congratulations on your retirement, Dad. May this new chapter bring you the well-deserved rest and the opportunity to enjoy “a bit more me time.”

Elly x
